My childhood was a very, very sweet one. One that I look back on with a big smile and much gratitude to two parents who focused on their family and wanted to instil a love of adventure and nature on their two kids.
My parents love the outdoors so you can image what my childhood looked like: most of our weekends we were either camping in the bush (not a lot of caravan park camping for us…we mostly roughed it!), 4WDing by ourselves or with our 4WD club, at the beach with my brother and I while we hung onto the back of mum and dad’s windsurf boards as they flew across the water, flying about on tubes towed by our family dingy across a remote lake, and hiking through the Royal National Park to the amazing cliffs in Bundeena right near where we grew up. We spent A LOT of time outside.
Our biggest adventure was when I was 10 and my brother was 8 years old. We travelled around Australia for 6 months as a family. An absolute highlight of my life and I’m so blessed to have experienced it! It’s such a treasured time for me and so much so that one of my own family goals is to do the same one day soon with Judah and Kirk. Thankfully my husband also has a huge love of camping and Australian travel!
Our first big Australia trip probably won’t happen for a few years yet, but in the meantime we have been making good use of our tent and getting into the outdoors for some short camping trips. I guess the issue for us has been that we want to take some extended trips amongst some quick overnight camping ones as we travel around and setting up and packing up a tent can get a little tedious after a while….and let’s not talk about the stuff we pack into the car! We are lucky to fit Judah in!
Our dream and need for something a little more practical for our use has lead us on a hunt for a Jayco camper. Having one of these beauties will open up this lifestyle for us and give us the flexibility to travel with ease, as it’s compact, pre-packed with our gear, quick to set up and pack away, long-lasting and comfortable.
Our search began quite a few months ago online as we compared models and prices and learnt about what we would need to consider when buying one. We’ve learnt a lot over this time and have narrowed it down to two models: Jayco Swan and Jayco Hawk (see layouts below):
We are leaning towards the Swan a little bit for a few reasons. As you can see with the Swan there are two couch areas. At first we thought that might be a little impractical, but thinking more about it we figured if we needed to permanently set up another bed (extra child or friend camping with us!) we would like to be able to still use the table and seats without having to pack up the bed each morning. The Swan has a more storage too, which we have heard is VERY handy from seasons Jayco Camper peeps! We’d like to have an annex for when the weather turns bad or if we are having a longer stay, and our cooking would be set up outside on our gas cooker. More on the camping details later 🙂
Be sure to keep checking back for more updates on our Jayco search and what adventures we will be going on with it!
